SWEET – A southern boy, this guy really is a gentleman. He opens doors for girls, always helps them in the car first, that sort of thing. He has a huge heart and he loves to prove it.
INTELLIGENT – Borderline nerd, Carter is very intelligent. He has always done well in school and continues to make excellent marks at whatever he does. He has book smarts and street smarts – making him a great addition to any trivia team.
CREATIVE – He’s an artsy soul, so he enjoys making things or listening to music. Of course, he loves to play a little guitar and piano on the side when no one’s around to hear it.
DAMAGED – Due to traumatic events of his past, he’s a bit scarred. Damaged due to death and guilt and blame, Carter still deals with the emotional struggle that can break one’s heart.
CHARMING – A hopeless romantic, Carter does have a sweet side for ladies despite his past with them. He loves to charm people and he certainly enjoys cooking a meal or two for a lady friend.
PROTECTIVE – Due to his past, Carter is very protective. He feels like it was his fault that two people he loved are dead. And he’s obsessed with preventing it from happening again.

HISTORY:
Oklahoma is a boring state. Carter Meredith will be the first to tell you that. He grew up in a little town that boasts nothing but farmland. The nearest Walmart was an hour away, even. He lived on a small farm, where his parents Anna and James made their home peaceful and memorable. James ran the land, selling crops and exporting goods. It was the typical farm life, too. Except that Carter really wanted nothing to do with it. He had a horse which he loved, sure. But it wasn’t for him. Ever since he was a little kid, Carter was too busy dreaming about something new than to worry about taking care of the animals and the corn and whatever else his father harped on him about. His mother, a sweet-natured little lady, made her living as a teacher at a local school, where Carter attended with pride. He received excellent grades and discovered from an early age that he was definitely an intelligent creature.
His little brother was his best friend and, if Carter has his way, always will be. The two are only ten months apart, which makes them very close. Carter was attached to his brother all throughout their childhood and anywhere Carter went to cause trouble, his little brother was tagging along with him. Along with their cousin Macey, the three were inseparable. The Three Muskateers, they were called. Macey lived with Carter and his family after her own parents couldn’t take care of her. Carter's parents took Macey in and raised her as their own. Carter was attached to her too. He really loved that cousin. More than anyone to this day, in fact. Except maybe, Kari Williams. Since kindergarten, Carter had a crush on Kari Williams. She was pretty, sweet, smart, and funny: the perfect combination to make any schoolboy fall fast. But the crush lasted into high school and Carter finally made a move – the two started dating soon after. Carter and Kari were the cutest couple. They were the talk of their small little town for years. They were together until Carter was twenty. Just a year ago. After three years of dating, tragedy struck.
There’s not much to do when you live in a small town. Aside from cow-tipping and digging for random artifacts, the only other pastime was to hang out on the railroad tracks. They’d been told hundreds of times that playing on the tracks was dangerous. Especially in a town so small that they don’t even put the warning lights on the tracks to alert when a train is approaching. It was ten thirty at night when Carter, Kari and Macey learned their lesson. It was Carter’s idea to go hang out on the tracks that night. He thought the stars looked perfect from that point of view. And he’d been hearing a lot of ghost stories about the tracks – he wanted to scare his girlfriend and cousin. But that’s not how it worked out. The three were sitting on the tracks, throwing rocks down a small hill to see which would land first when they heard it coming. They heard the train before they saw it. Out of instinct, Carter jumped. He rolled down the hill to avoid the train and assumed Kari and Macey would do the same. He didn’t even think to pull them with him. He failed them. And the worst part was: he had to watch it happen. He saw the train hit his girlfriend. He saw the train hit his cousin. His two favorite people, the two women he had every truly loved. And he had watched… maybe even caused… their death.
It’s been a year since the accident but Carter can’t go back to Oklahoma. A day after the funeral, Carter fled town. He didn’t know where he was going, but he knew it had to be far away. Unfortunately his gas money could only get him so far and he ended up in Louisiana. He’d heard a lot about New Orleans and that was enough to make him stay. He’d love to go to school, but he knows right now he can’t afford it. So he’s working to pay the bills and hopefully earn enough money for school. This wasn’t how he planned on living. He had pictured himself in school, making good grades, being successful. But right now, he’s too lost to figure it out anyway.

SAMPLE:Days like this were Eli’s favorite. Well, his second favorite anyway. His favorite day was when he could lay in bed with his girlfriend all day, watching TV or talking for seventeen hours. Raining. Snowing. Something to keep them inside – that was his favorite day. But today was second best because it was easy. He didn’t have any classes and he only worked a small shift. Working at the theater was a lot more satisfying than he thought it would be when he took the job. He only had to work late on nights when there was a show or some kind of rehearsal he needed to help out with. Stagehands didn’t really have much to do, though, so he was generally off the hook. Today, he only had to go to the theater for three hours to sit in on a rehearsal and help the actors read their new scripts. He loved that part. He got to pretend like he was an actor, which he in no way was, and sometimes the show’s director would even let Eli call out orders. It was a dream, really. But that wasn’t even why Eli looked forward to these days so much. No, he had a better reason. With no class or work to take up his time, he was able to go home and spend the rest of his day with Bridget. She had the day off as well and, as far as he was concerned, they would make the rare occurrence worthwhile.
Thankfully, work was cooperating with his plan to get home. He didn’t even have to stay for all of his shift. One of the actors asked if he wanted to get coffee when they were done, but he kindly refused. Eli… refuse coffee? It was generally unheard of. But when faced with the option of having some delicious beverage with a work friend, or embrace his time off with his girlfriend, there was absolutely no contest. It was obvious Eli was in love, and had been for the past six years. It made the drive home more anxious, though. Not only was Eli not a fan of London traffic, but he wanted to get home faster than the average human being should ever attempt and it was proving to create quite the case of road rage. He drummed his hands on the steering wheel as he was stuck in traffic, his eyes darting around to all the stores surrounding him. He wondered if Bridget had eaten. Should he bring home food? Did they have drinks in the house? Should he, maybe, bring home some groceries? They hadn’t gotten groceries in a while. At least, not that Eli could remember. He hated when Bridget went by herself. He felt like it was a joint job, not just forced upon the woman. Besides, Eli quite enjoyed grocery shopping. He got to climb on the cart and ride around on it like it was a Mario Kart video game. Although, sometimes Bridget wouldn’t race him. He’d change that soon enough.
He pulled into the townhouse’s driveway before he could even think about shopping anymore. He sat in the driveway staring at the clock and listening to his stomach growl. He should have picked up food. But this only gave him room to take his girlfriend for a nice lunch. Better than fast food and absolutely better than anything he could cook up in the kitchen. Yes, that was a perfect plan! He quickly turned off his car and headed inside, the familiarity of the house making him smile instantly. "Bee! Get your dancin’ shoes on. We’re going out for lunch!” he hollered, surely louder than necessary. And definitely more obnoxiously than his neighbors would have preferred. A quick glance around the living room proved his girlfriend wasn’t around. Clock check: it wasn’t even the afternoon yet. Jasmine was still in school and Bridget must have been upstairs. Yes, she was probably busy being beautiful in their bedroom or something. Eli tossed down his keys and headed for the stairs, a smile growing on his face as he sped up the steps with his head down so his eyes could focus on his feet to prevent a clumsy tumble back down. "Your choice where. I’m just starving and I think we—" Eli should have been paying more attention because before he could finish his smiley little train of conversation, he ran right into Bridget. He stared at her for a moment before realizing he had just caused her to stumble backward and quickly reached out to stop her from falling.
"I’m sorry! Are you okay? I wasn’t watching where I was going,” he stammered, his smile refusing to depart despite the collision. He was sure it was something they could laugh about. Right? Wrong. The instant Eli got a good look at the face of the woman in front of him, his smile vanished. Where it went, he would never know. He rarely lost that smile. But he knew Bridget better than he knew anyone else, and he could tell something was wrong. "Bridget, are you… crying?” He stared at her, almost frozen in place. He’d never seen her cry before. Not once. They’d often discussed, in fact, how she was positive she didn’t even possess the ability to produce tears. "Did I hit you that hard? I mean, I know I’ve been working out… but, babe, I didn’t mean to.” He wasn’t really joking. Well, about the working out part, probably. But Eli was confused and quite honestly – terrified – that the look on his girlfriend’s face proved she had been upset. And it was his job to fix it. If only he knew what was wrong.
