FAMILY, LAST TIME I CHECKED
IS A GROUP OF PEOPLE THAT GIVE YOU LOVE
WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT

There were a few things that Steven valued in his life. He figured they made him a good person or, if nothing else, at least a better person. Because they could have been horrible things. His list of valued things could include a stack of playboy magazines, violent video games, and beer. But those weren’t his list. In fact, for the most part, he didn't even value those items at all. His list was simple: friends, music, and his sister.
Steven figured if they ever wrote a biography about for his life – for what reason that would occur, he wasn’t sure – they would mention how much he loved his sister and how much Delilah really meant to him. He liked to think not too many other brother/sister combinations could claim this. Not too many of his friends claimed to be as protective of their sisters, anyway. It set Steven apart, in his mind, and made him feel important. He had someone he cared about. And, more importantly, someone who cared about him. Since his heart was shamelessly shattered in last year’s break-up, it was a feeling he very much needed. And, in his opinion, a feeling he deserved.
He mulled over these thoughts as he headed to meet his sister, walking along the sidewalk, his thoughts running so wild that his feet couldn’t keep up and he was likely to trip on anything as small as a caterpillar. He had a habit for tripping on things, he blamed it on his usual absentminded nature. He hadn’t told his sister he was coming to meet her on campus today. Part of him figured it would have been better. The definite safer way. Then he would ensure the possibility of actually running into her. But he also liked the element of surprise. And he’d asked Delilah’s boyfriend where he was likely to find her during the current hour and his answer was the cafeteria. He figured it was worth a shot. If nothing else, Steven would get the strange satisfying joy he received from walking around the college. He’d never been to school. Not college, anyway. And it wasn’t because he hadn’t wanted to. He’d planned, in fact, on attending. After he took a year off to spend time with his girlfriend. But that was all gone and his decision was made, never reversed, and he now spent his free time working. Being on campus made him feel as if he’d made the right decision, as if he was proud, successful, and even smart. People didn’t look at him funny either. They sometimes didn't notice at him all, a few people waved, and most of the guys even gave him the infamous nod of hello. He fit in, and he liked it.
Besides, no one ever questioned his status as a student. None of the professors had stopped him yet, he’d never had to prove his purpose for being on the grounds, and he’d been here countless times to see his sister. He liked the freedom. He knew where the cafeteria was by heart, if only because his stomach was already growling. To get into the cafeteria – for some lame reason Steven would never understand – each student had to scan his or her ID card. This never stopped him before. He pulled out the ID he’d bought… actually, bullied… off a freshman a few months ago and gave it a quick scan before entering the loud-but-thankfully-not-deafening cafeteria and bypassing the lines for food. The lady behind the cashier counter gave him an odd look but he dared her to question him (at least, he dared her in his mind, which counted for him.) A quick glance around the room provided even more proof for Steven that he should have gone to college. He would have liked it. There were clusters of guys he was sure he’d get along with. A group of girls who were undoubtedly gorgeous. A guy with a guitar. Some girl with a laptop covering most of her face. Then, his sister. Delilah was easy to spot, at least for Steven. He figured it was because he knew her so well. But he also considered it to be because she was the nicest, sweetest girl in the whole place. And these characteristics were evident in her looks. She lit up any room.
He pulled up the hood on his sweatshirt and quietly snuck up behind his sister as he took a seat next to her, wondering if anyone was joining Lil or if she was alone today. He kind of wished she was, it would mean more bonding time for him. ”I hope you haven’t gotten lunch yet,” he spoke suddenly, his grin quite evident regardless of any hooded disguise, ”because I brought real food.” He threw a backpack down next to him. He didn’t need to carry the thing, obviously. He had no books to speak of. But he did it for two reasons. 1) it made him look legitimate and 2) he was concealing food. He figured sneaking good food into the cafeteria was a crime. Or, at least, would make him look suspicious. But he’d gone by Byblos Restaurant before arriving and purchased all the good stuff: hearty pasta, the best breadsticks, and even a salad in case she so desired. He took care of his sister. At least, he tried. And besides, it was his day off. He’d rather not spend it anywhere else. ”You can’t be eating this cafeteria food. I don’t care what they say, it’s full of poison and probably cats,” he shuddered, his smile proving he was both joking – no matter how seriously disgusting he considered the cafeteria food must be – and that he was glad to see her. He only hoped she was just as excited by his unannounced appearance. He seemed to be missing her a lot lately.
