A year post the events of Jean Grey's resurgence as an alternate personality known simply as “The Phoenix,” Dies Irae begins with the fortifying of Xavier's Institute after the fallout. Ororo Munroe, Henry McCoy, and Wolverine are now acting as senior members of the Institute's staff. It appears that Colossus, Iceman, Shadowcat, and Rogue have graduated into the ranks of X-Men and there are a new set of X-Juniors who shall embark in the journey that was once so familiar to these new X-Men. All is not lost for these X-Men. With Ororo leading and guiding this team best to her ability, it seems new light has shed upon the group, despite the death of three very instrumental figures that once were present in their daily lives. Still hoping to achieve Charles Xavier's vision, the X-Men continue steadfast, not wavering from their ideals.
There is still a great deal of gossip within the mutant world of the “panacea” for all mutant existence. Such a cure which caused an uproar amongst the purist, supremest mutants known as the Brotherhood is now seeming readily accepted by many mutants. The outcome is such that mutants travel from Europe to receive this well-received cure, and without any outer influences such as the Brotherhood to interfere with the likes of the scientists who derived this cure from the mutant Leech, progress seems infinite and results entirely effective. With the X-Men in opposition to this cure, they remain in a plight of being able to act proactively with the public whenever humans are encouraging for conformity to this cure.
Only twenty-five percent of known mutants have accepted the cure. Displeased with the percentile, the Government is hoping to achieve sixty-five percent of living mutants to accept the cure within the next year. Though unaware of the motives of the Government officials, mutants face an imminent danger. Resting upon the horizon is a threat not yet imagined. Sentinels, while already existent aren't quite as dangerous in a smaller number. In the event that the sixty-five percentage is not met, Congress intends to enact a mandate of a mass production, a gambit in order to persuade mutants to accept this cure to appease the majority – humans.
While many speculate that Charles Xavier still exists somewhere upon the planet, other seems to have resigned to the belief that he is virtually dead. Without any activity from The Brotherhood which would thwart the plans of mutants attempting to prove themselves to humanity it would seem that a bright future lies ahead for mutantkind. Supposedly gossip shares with the underground mutants that this former antagonistic group has long disbanded without the proper leadership of Magneto or even Mystique.
Mysterious as they are appealing and charismatic, The Hellions, a group of seemingly unknown but recently popularized mutants have been proactive in assuring that mutants retain their rights. Having made several trips to Washington to promote and discuss their treatment, these Hellions have reached success, a feat and attempt that was futile for Charles Xavier and the late Jean Grey.
